Sophia College, founded in 1941, is affiliated to the University of Mumbai, and was the first women’s college of the Mumbai University. The College is run by the Society for the Higher Education of Women in India, which was established by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an international organisation that has educational works in all the five continents.

THE FOCUS OF THE COLLEGE IS ON THE ALL-ROUND DEVELOPMENT OF ITS STUDENTS AND THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN THROUGH EDUCATION.

In March 2009, SOPHIA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN was re-accredited by NAAC (the National Assessment and Accreditation Council) with an ‘A’ grade and a very high CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 3.61. This is among the highest scores in India.

The College has outstanding infrastructure, including the verdant gardens and beautiful heritage buildings, an up-to-date information centre, excellent science and computer laboratories, gymnasium, basketball court, multipurpose hall and convention centre.

Student support is fostered by our full-time social worker, counsellors, the Coordinator of Student Activities and two Wardens. Special aid is available for students from socially and economically backward groups.

A variety of extracurricular activities, through the many Clubs and activities, as well as through Kaleidoscope, our inter-collegiate youth festival, provide our students opportunities for all-round development.

The Sophia Shree Basant Kumar Somani Memorial Polytechnic was established in June 1970, with an aim to provide professional education and practical training to undergraduate and postgraduate students – particularly women – to equip them with the appropriate skills that would empower them to take their rightful place in the modern world.

The Sophia Smt. Manorama Devi Somani College, affiliated to the University of Mumbai, offers the 3-Year Bachelors Degree Programme – B.Sc. in Hospitality Studies.

The Sophia Institute of Social Communications Media offers an intensive and comprehensive 1-Year Postgraduate Programme in various media – TV, Print, Audio/Video Production, Social Media, and more.

The Polytechnic also offers short term courses in Craft Bakery & Confectionery, and Dynamics in Baking & Patisserie.

In addition to these courses we also have the community development programme sponsored by the government of India to provide vocational training in rural areas to school dropouts and housewives.

To ensure the all round development of the students a programme in Ethics & Spirituality under the auspices of the Shree Cooverji Hormusji Bhabha Foundation is also conducted.

We are a small, diverse and inclusive group, welcoming in our midst a variety of socio-cultural backgrounds, ages and temperaments. Primarily an educational congregation, our earliest ventures were in the field of education

Sophia College for Women in Mumbai was our first foundation in 1941, and remains the institution with which we are most often associated. The College has continued to grow in the years since then, and while some sisters continue to work there, a number have moved on into other areas of service. Today, the range includes Schools, Colleges& Nursery Schools.
